Jaw Pain
Jaw pain is often associated with the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) or the muscles that surround it. Collectively, these are called a temporomandibular disorder (TMD). Jaw pain can start for a variety of reasons, such as teeth grinding, excess chewing, or prolonged opening. However, oftentimes the cause of the pain is unknown.
What does it feel like?
People with jaw pain from the TMJ can experience pain in front of the ear, headaches, or face pain. It can often be associated with clicking or popping, especially when trying to open the mouth to talk, chew, or yawn. Some people may have difficulty opening their mouth all the way due to this pain.
How To Get Rid of It
Physical therapy for jaw pain involves hands-on therapy to stretch your muscles and joints. It also involves exercises to improve your motion which allow you to return to pain-free movements of your jaw. Physical therapists work alongside your dentist to solve your jaw pain.
