What is mechanotherapy?

Formally, mechanotherapy is the use of individualized and progressive resistance training to therapeutically remodel tissue and reduce pain. In other words, mechanotherapy is exercise prescription specifically for the treatment of injuries.

Resistance training has been shown to change the body’s tissues at a cellular level. Specific cells within your tendons, muscles, cartilage and bones grow and adapt when given the correct amount of load. Injured and healthy tissues can respond differently to mechanical load so when rehabilitating from an injury, it is important to have the expertise of a physical therapist during this process. Furthermore, proper adherence to mechanotherapy principles can reduce the risk of future injury.

How can I use mechanotherapy?

Mechanotherapy is injury-specific and will be different for each person. Similar to how medication is prescribed with a certain strength, dose, and frequency, exercise is prescribed the same way. If you are interested in seeing some specific examples of mechanotherapy, check out these links below.
