Training Barriers We Help You Overcome

What is a Personal Trainer?

A Personal Trainer is a coach that helps plan and motivate you to achieve your goals.

We are licensed clinicians that have received a doctoral graduate degree from an accredited university. A personal trainer is an expert in anatomy, physiology, and kinesiology.

Because a personal trainer is an expert in these areas, you do not need a worry about creating your own program.

What happens during the 1st personal training appointment?

When you have an appointment with a personal trainer, they will first perform a thorough evaluation. The evaluation consists of a subjective and objective portion. The subjective portion allows you to describe your fitness goals. You will guide this conversation. The physical therapist may facilitate this conversation by asking open-ended questions such as:

  • What are your goals?
  • When do you want to achieve them?
  • Have you exercised in the past?
  • What type of exercise do you like?
  • Do you have any prior injuries?
  • Do you currently have any pain?

Your answers to these questions help a personal trainer to begin thinking about how to create a plan. A plan is the act of creating a road map to your fitness goals. In order to fully understand your goals, they will perform the objective portion of the evaluation. The objective examination includes tests and measures. During the objective examination, the personal trainer may ask you to do the following:

  • Strength test
  • Endurance test
  • Perform functional activities such as walking, reaching, lifting, carrying, running, throwing or jumping – depending on the nature of your goals

Also during the objective examination, the personal trainer might:

  • Measure your range of motion which is the amount of movement you have at a joint
  • Analyze how you move when you walk, reach, lift, carry, run, jump, or throw

Based on the results of your subjective and objective examination, we will educate you on the following 3 items: goal setting, common barriers, and your plan. Based on this information, your personal trainer will allow you to ask questions.

What happens during a follow up session?

Because fitness changes with time, personal training consists of follow-up appointments after the evaluation. The follow-up appointments can vary in frequency from multiple times per week, once per week, or once per month. During these follow-up sessions, we will ask questions to learn how your fitness has changed and how the current exercises have been affecting your goal. Based on your goal and your responses to the personal trainer’s questions, the personal trainer will adjust your exercises. The adjustments vary based on the treatment but can consist of:

  • Increasing or decreasing your resistance level during strengthening exercises
  • Moving through more or less range of motion
  • Increasing or decreasing the frequency of your exercise
