What is Dry Needling?
Dry needling is a technique used by physical therapists to treat pain and movement impairments. It involves the insertion of a thin, sterile needle into specific points in the muscle. These points are called myofascial trigger points, and they are associated with muscle pain, stiffness, and decreased range of motion.
What does it feel like?
Dry needling is generally well-tolerated, but some patients may experience mild discomfort during the treatment.
When a needle is inserted into a trigger point, it causes a local twitch response. This is a brief contraction of the muscle, which can be felt by the patient. The twitch response is thought to release chemicals that help to reduce pain and muscle tension.
How does it help?
The benefits of dry needling include:
- Pain relief
- Increased range of motion
- Improved flexibility
- Reduced muscle tension
Dry needling is a safe and effective treatment for pain and movement impairments. It is used in conjunction with other physical therapy treatments, such as stretching, strengthening, and other hands-on technqiues.
